RAW HOME PHONE VIDEO. One single continuous 30-second recording with no cuts at all, made on a smartphone by a neighbor standing inside his trailer, holding the phone up to the open window, uploaded unedited. The phone never stops recording and never jumps: every change of view comes from the neighbor moving the phone, zooming or tilting. The window frame and a torn bug screen edge show at the left and bottom of the picture now and then as he moves. Amateur handheld, natural shake, clumsy jerky pinch-zooms in and out, autofocus that hunts when things move, auto exposure that blows out the bright desert sky, ordinary phone noise, true-to-life colors. No overlays, no text on screen, no music. The neighbor is never still and nothing in the picture is ever still. [ref_still] locks the people and the place: - The same three guys: - One in a white tank top and trucker cap. - One in a gray tank top and cap. - One in a dark t-shirt and cap. - All in shorts and flip-flops. - The same worn floral orange sofa with the big cluster of white balloons tied to it with ropes. - The small black kettle grill strapped to one armrest. - The red cooler hanging from the sofa. - The long green rope tied to the hitch ball of the old pickup. - The dirt yard. - The clothesline with laundry. - The inflatable pool with the yellow duck. - The aluminum ladder. - The white trailer homes. - The saguaro. - The power lines. - The scruffy tan dog. Warm late-afternoon desert light. OPENING — 0:00 The recording opens on the whole scene seen from the window. The sofa sits on the dirt, straining upward on its ropes, the balloons bobbing and bumping into each other above it. Two of the guys are on the ladder and on the ground tying the last ropes to the sofa legs. The third pulls a knot tight with his teeth. The dog trots back and forth around them, sniffing and wagging. LIFT-OFF — ~0:02 After about two seconds they finish and step back. The sofa lifts a few centimeters off the dirt and the three guys scramble and jump onto it one after another, landing on the cushions. With their weight it drops back down, scrapes the ground and wobbles, then starts climbing again. The neighbor pinch-zooms in clumsily and back out while the dog runs in a circle and jumps toward the sofa. ASCENDING Without any break, the sofa keeps climbing slowly with the green rope unrolling from the pickup hitch. The guys celebrate: - High-fives. - Fists in the air. - One cracks a beer from the cooler and drinks. - Another lifts the lid of the grill, smoke puffing out, grabs a burger with tongs and hands it to his buddy, who takes a big bite. - They laugh, point at the houses below and rock the sofa. The neighbor zooms in on them, loses focus, and zooms back out to show the rope getting tight. ROPE TENSION The green rope pulls tight from the hitch ball with a jolt and the sofa stops a few meters up, swaying and slowly turning on the end of the rope. The guys bounce with the jolt, then settle in: - Chatting. - One stretches his arms behind his head. - One passes beers around. - One flips another burger. - They wave down at the yard. Below, the dog backs away a few steps from the rope and barks up at them nonstop. THE CAT Still in the same continuous recording, a black cat walks in from the left across the dirt with its tail straight up, calm, ignoring the barking dog. It hops onto the pickup's bumper, sits next to the hitch ball and stares at the knot of the green rope. The neighbor pinch-zooms in on the cat, shaky and half out of focus, whispering: "no, no, no" Above, the guys keep drinking and laughing without noticing. THE SNAP The cat swipes once at the rope with its claws and the green rope snaps free from the hitch. The sofa shoots up into the sky, the loose rope whipping behind it. The guys grab the armrests and each other, screaming in panic. A beer can and a burger fall off. FINAL MOMENT The neighbor zooms out fast and tilts the phone up to follow the sofa as it gets smaller and smaller against the blue sky, the screams fading. Below, the cat licks its paw by the hitch and the dog runs in circles barking at the sky. The recording keeps following the sofa until the last instant. SOUND Sound throughout: only what the phone picks up through the window. - Balloons squeaking. - Rope creaking. - The dog panting and barking. - The guys laughing, whooping, chatting and finally screaming. - A can opening. - The grill lid clanking. - Wind. - The neighbor's breathing. - His disbelieving laugh at the end. No music. Enjoy! 🫡
